And one that is aided and abetted by the GOP. Is the GOP more about incompetence or is it corruption, or a deadly cocktail of both of the above? Anyway you want to slice it, the GOP hold on power is pathological to our Democracy, what little is left of it.
I find it quite astonishing, really, to see that the mainstream media and the GOP (for whom the MSM has appallingly and tacitly endorsed in a rather disgusting and groveling fashion, until NOW), took 5 years to get a grip on whom Bush & Co. really are.

Why were the Bush/Katrina videos held back until now? Why were the Downing Street Memos buried deep into the remote sections of the respected national newspapers, if published at all? Why were the blatant and mortal lies on Iraq withheld until now? Why was the New York Times’ report on Bush’s illegal wiretapping held back one entire year?
Why did amateur bloggers and America’s average Joe and Jane USA have to flee to the Internet to find a glimpse at reality, knowing that something is terribly and horribly wrong with our country since the Supreme Court appointed Bush in 2000?
Why did the MSM and even the Democrat Party ignore the mathematically and statistically proven reports of voter fraud in Florida in 2000 and in Ohio 2004?
WHY?
I think America bought into the Bush, Inc. spin about crazy “conspiracy theorists” hook, line and sinker. Why? Because we ourselves are a tad lazy when it comes to keeping up with current events and we want everything to be just peachy fine so we can get on with our overworked, overly committed and money making fixated lives. In the process we have probably become somewhat complacent and like it or not, most of us are imbued with a sense of entitlement. Sadly, we more or less checked out and no longer demand accountability from our elected officials.
Keenly aware of our collective weaknesses, Bush & Co. (enabled by Cheney and Rove types) hammered the nail in our coffin up by scaring the living hell out of us about terrorism. And we allowed Bush to instill mortal fear in our souls after 9/11.
Ironically, Bush will veto any attempt to halt a deal that could bring Trojan horse terrorists into our ports and factories, and perhaps our National Forests.
Surely everyone gets it now.
Why the big fuss in the MSM and among certain GOP members about Bush, Ltd. transgressions and abuses at this moment in time? I suspect both groups, either knowingly or tacitly complicit with Bush spin, are attempting to cover their lazy, limp and disingenuous derrieres now that Pandora’s box has been blown wide open.
I am not blaming the GOP and MSM alone. We the people must take responsibility too. LS

The one-page October 2002 President's Summary specifically told Bush that although "most agencies judge" that the use of the aluminum tubes was "related to a uranium enrichment effort... INR and DOE believe that the tubes more likely are intended for conventional weapons uses."
The lengthier NIE -- more than 90 pages -- contained significantly more detail describing the disagreement between the CIA and the Pentagon's DIA on one hand, which believed that the tubes were meant for centrifuges, and State's INR and the Energy Department, which believed that they were meant for artillery shells. Administration officials had said that the president would not have read the full-length paper. They also had said that many of the details of INR's dissent were contained in a special text box that was positioned far away from the main text of the report.
But the one-page summary, several senior government officials said in interviews, was written specifically for Bush, was handed to the president by then-CIA Director George Tenet, and was read in Tenet's presence.

Still, there is one way for the Court to stake out a middle ground. Instead of striking down all partisan gerrymandering, thus sowing chaos in dozens of states shortly before the 2006 congressional elections, the Justices could simply say that a politically inspired mid-decade redistricting violates the Constitution. "We're simply asking for them to go back to the map the courts approved in 2001, and that Texas used in the 2002 election,"
Sam Hirsch, another lawyer for the Democrats, says. "It takes care of the worst of the problems, it's neat and simple, and there's no need for the courts themselves to draw district lines."
This option, which would be a major loss for the Texas Republican Party, might mean a win for Tom DeLay. Instead of running against DeLay, Nick Lampson could run in the district where he won as an incumbent in 2002.
"That could certainly happen," Lampson told me. "I will have to make that decision when it actually becomes a reality." DeLay, in turn, would lose a well-financed challenger in the new district, and return to his old district, which was more Republican anyway. (DeLay declined to comment.)
Ultimately, DeLay's extremism may turn out to have been a national service, if it compels the Supreme Court to confront the problem of uncompetitive congressional elections. "I think that everybody knows this is a national scandal," says Samuel Issacharoff, of N.Y.U., who has filed a brief in support of the Democrats in the Texas case. "Every Justice has at some point said the situation is deeply wrong. They may disagree about whether the courts can do anything about it, or about how to fix the problem, but not a single member of the Court is willing to say that this is how our democracy is supposed to work."
