LIVING IN BUSH'S HEART OF DARKNESS

"TRIUMPH OF THE MACHINE" By Paul Krugman of the NYT.

Krugman discusses how the GOP strategy, mired in cronyism, deceit and hypocrisy, continues to "deliver," despite the fact that most Americans disapprove of Bush’s policies. In short, Bush, Inc. doesn't give a hoot about policy per se. The GOP uses so-called policy as a means to reward friends and punish foes. The real agenda of the GOP has nothing to do with anything but one party rule. If the machine is working quite well, as Mr. Krugman suggests, we have no one to blame but ourselves for our own complacency in allowing it to happen. LS

Excerpt:

The answer is that the administration is getting nowhere on its grand policy agenda. But it never took policy, as opposed to politics, very seriously anyway. The agenda it has always taken with utmost seriousness - consolidating one-party rule, and rewarding its friends - is moving forward quite nicely.

"HEART OF DARKNESS"
By John Steinberg, Raw Story Columnist

This is an awesome piece. Mr. Steinberg analyzes the psychology of Bush's personal belief system, or ,er, lack thereof. LS

Excerpt:

Post-Enlightenment folks tend to think of knowledge as an empirical thing: knowledge is the product of evidence that comports with a theory or world view. As such, we seek data, and when the data are inconclusive or inconsistent with expectation, we admit that we don’t know.

That, I submit, is not what George Bush means when he says he knows something. He knew Karl Rove was innocent in the same way he knew that there were WMDs in Iraq, and that Osama got birthday cards from Saddam. More to the point, he knew it the way he knew God wanted him to be president.

In other words, he knows Rove is blameless in the way he knows his religious beliefs are true—based not upon a survey of facts, evidence and expertise, but upon an inventory of only the desolate, monochromatic landscape of his own interior.

"ROBERTS WAS PART OF LEGAL TEAM EAGER TO SHIFT COURSE OF CIVIL RIGHTS LAW"

In yet another attempt to shove neoconservative "values" down our collective throats by the Bush, Inc. nomination of a so called "moderate conservative", the mainstream press has fortunately caught on to the fact that Roberts is in lock step with the neoconservative ideology. LS

GUANTANAMO TRIALS RIGGED?

On ABC News Online via Raw Story.

Suspecting fraud, two prosecutors left the Office of Military Commission.

Excerpt:

Maj Preston writes that the process is perpetrating a fraud on the American people, and that the cases being pursued are marginal.

"I consider the insistence on pressing ahead with cases that would be marginal even if properly prepared to be a severe threat to the reputation of the military justice system and even a fraud on the American people," Maj Preston wrote.

"Surely they don't expect that this fairly half-arsed effort is all that we have been able to put together after all this time."

Maj Preston says he cannot continue to work on a process he considers morally, ethically and professionally intolerable.
